Cotton Armor Sound Solutions

The Natural Defense Against Noise Pollution

Peace, tranquility and quietness are basic human needs; required for a healthy and vibrant life. Increasing levels of noise pollution at work, home and elsewhere can be a major problem. Noise pollution may increase susceptibility to heart disease, hypertension and result in many harmful effects such as hearing loss, tinnitus, increased stress and sleep deprivation.

Cotton Armor Sound Attenuation Insulation
Cotton Armor is the 21st century hybrid sound solution; utilizing the ancient acoustical properties of cotton, technologically coupled with a proprietary production process resulting in a sustainable high performance defense against unwanted sound. Cotton Armor contains 85% recycled content and utilizes cotton denim fibers, making it an environmentally sustainable sound control solution. It’s non-irritating and as safe to use as your favorite pair of jeans.

Sound Panels and Baffles
Cotton Armor Sound Panels are 2' by 4' and available in one and two inch, three-pound density panels. The Sound Panels have the following Sound Absorption Ability (SAA) ratings of .88 (1”) and 1.04 (2”) and Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) .90 (1”) and 1.05 (2").

Test results in Sabines are available for both one and two inch thick Cotton Armor Sound Baffles.

Acoustical and Thermal Insulation Blankets
Cotton Armor Acoustical Insulation is optimally sized for 16" and 24" o.c. residential and commercial framing and have the following Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings. The higher the STC rating the better the sound deadening ability of the material.

An R-13 Cotton Armor insulated wall: 52 STC

An R-19 Cotton Armor insulated wall: 53 STC

An R-21 Cotton Armor insulated wall: 54 STC

(Above, STC ratings calculated according to ASTM E-90 testing for sound transmission loss in 24" o.c. steel stud walls and one 5/8th inch layer of type X gypsum on each side.)

For Party Walls:

An R-19 Cotton Armor insulated wall: 59 STC
with two layers of Cotton Armor:        62 STC

An R-13 Cotton Armor insulated wall: 57 STC
with two layers of Cotton Armor:        60 STC

(Above party wall STC ratings were calculated according to ASTM E-90 testing for sound transmission loss in double 24” o.c. wood stud walls with one 5/8th inch layer type X gypsum on each side.)

Previously, in order to achieve an STC rating in the 50s expensive specialty materials and wall configurations were needed. The increased cost of superior acoustical performance brought effective sound control out of reach for many. Cotton Armor insulation helps make premium acoustical performance affordable as it is competitively priced and achieves its superior STC ratings in large part because of its proprietary 21st century production process which also makes it easier to properly size and install than yesteryears batts.

Installers and building operators appreciate the advantages of reduced installation time and increased acoustical performance of Cotton Armor insulation. Installers also avoid the headaches and increased cost of special sound control products and wall constructions.

The tables below gives some examples regarding the general effectiveness of STC ratings as they pertain to what one can hear.

STC Rating

Typical Description of Performance

30

Loud speech understood fairly well

35

Loud speech audible but unintelligible

42

Loud speech audible as a murmur

45

Must strain to hear loud speech

48

Some loud speech barely audible

50

Loud speech usually not audible
